Alison Wearing wrote and stars in Confessions of a Fairy's Daughter, which is on stage at the Simcoe Street Theatre and presented by Theatre Collingwood.

The latest Theatre Collingwood show is a memoir designed to be seen and heard.

The one-woman show tells the story of author Alison Wearing's life growing up in the 1980s with a gay father. It's called Confessions of a Fairy's Daughter, and it's on the Simcoe Street Theatre stage for two more nights.

Theatre Collingwood's executive director, Erica Angus, said the play is one its audiences can't forget.

"Every once in a very long while you might be lucky enough to witness a play, brilliantly portrayed by an incredible story teller that then grabs your heart and won’t let go," said Angus in a news release for Confessions of a Fairy's Daughter. "Alison is so captivating and generous in this play, and by the end you have fallen completely in love with her and her entire family, and especially with the messages beautifully portrayed.”

Wearing is both the writer and actor for the play.

The play celebrates family life and the imperfect way a family can learn about love.

Wearing, who was born in Peterborough and later studied French, music and political science in Canada and abroad in Germany, is an award-winning writer. Confessions of a Fairy's Daughter began as a book before it was a play.

"Confessions has played to sold-out theatres across Canada, off-Broadway, and from Mexico to Sri Lanka, earning ovations and top honours at virtually every festival in which it has appeared. Its awards include four Fringe Festival Best of Fest awards, the CBC’s Outstanding Solo Show award, and Best Dramatic Script at NYC's United Solo, the largest festival of solo theatre in the world," states a news release from Theatre Collingwood.

Confessions of a Fairy’s Daughter is the fifth play of the season for Theatre Collingwood, which followed the theme of great storytellers for this year's playbills.

The play runs tonight and tomorrow (Sept. 22 and 23) at 7:30 p.m. at the Simcoe Street Theatre. Tickets are available through Theatre Collingwood by calling 705-445-2200 or online at www.theatrecollingwood.ca
