Women’s accomplishments celebrated to kick off festivities (6 photos)

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8

Feminism was in full display on Thursday afternoon in Collingwood.

International Women’s Day festivities kicked off on Thursday at the Collingwood Public Library with an official flag raising and reception.

“While we have economic freedom in our community, we still have a ways to go,” said Mayor Brian Saunderson, before reading the proclamation. “This is an important event to make sure we recognize that and promote that and move forward consciously to ensure we are providing equal opportunity for men and women and hopefully, as we progress, opportunities for other minorities.”

At the flag raising, Hella Sandberg along with her daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter spoke about the waves of feminism and the achievements of women of the past, present and future.

Poet-Laureate Day Merrill, accompanied by other local women, performed a public reading of the poem Be a Lady, They Said, which has gained viral status online.
