Three new COVID cases confirmed in Simcoe-Muskoka Thursday

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported three new COVID-19 cases and zero deaths in today's update (July 15). 

There are 46 active cases in the region.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 12,327 cases of COVID-19 with 11,605 of those cases recovered and 254 cases ending in death.

There are four people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19-related illnesses. There have been no new hospitalizations reported since Friday.

The health unit has confirmed 4,964 variant cases in the region so far, with 26 of those cases still active. 

Today's update also includes the following information on variants of concern: 

  • 3,997 local cases have tested positive for the COVID-19 variant of concern B.1.1.7 (alpha)
  • 166 cases have tested positive for the P.1 (gamma) variant of concern
  • 34 cases have tested positive for the B.1.351 (beta) variant of concern
  • 96 cases have tested positive for the B.1.617.2 (delta) variant of concern
  • An additional 671 cases have screened positive (awaiting confirmatory testing).

About 33 per cent of the region's total population is still unvaccinated, which includes children under 12 who are ineligible for a vaccine at this time. Forty-five per cent of the total population is fully vaccinated (53 per cent of the adult population) and 22 per cent has one dose. 

Anyone aged 12 years or older living in Simcoe-Muskoka region can book their first or second dose of vaccine online via Ontario vaccine booking system. More appointments are added regularly for clinics throughout the region.

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified). 

  • Barrie (2): One youth under 18 years old, and one person between 35 and 44 years old. One case is linked to close contact transmission. 
  • Midland (1):  One person between 45 and 64 years old whose case is linked to close contact transmission. 

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on July 15). 

It should be noted total cases minus recoveries, deaths, and hospitalizations does not equal active cases. Some confirmed cases were lost to follow-up and therefore are not listed as recovered.
