A tale about a costume contest will serve as the jumping point for lessons in various mediums for an upcoming kids event.
Darci Que is the author of a book series called Mollie Doodle, the costume contest story is called Why Didn’t I Win? Que will be part of the Storytelling Festival hosted by Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts later this month and into October. Que’s event is geared to kids and will include a reading and a Halloween-themed craft.
The moral of Que’s story is about sharing, and knowing it’s not always your turn to win, but when it’s your turn, you’ll get your accolades.
Que used to run an art camp for kids in Creemore for 16 years. She’s an artist by trade and a children’s book author. When she stopped her kids camp, she knew she would miss kids too much, so she continues to work at local events creating kids crafts and activities based on an event theme.
Her daughter Emily is known locally as Princess Emilie. She can often be found singing at local events - her specialty is the Disney classics. She'll be at the Storytelling Festival to help her mom with the kid's event.
For the Storytelling festival, she will be designing a craft that fits with the costume theme of the book and works with Halloween. She didn’t want to give away the surprise, but she promised it would encourage creativity and there would be plenty of supplies to work with.
“The more you work with kids, the more they create,” said Que. “I can give them an idea and let them be open and do their thing … kids are so honest and real and in the moment.”
The Halloween Craft event with Darci Que will take place at the Collingwood Public Library on Oct. 14 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
