Snowplows follow these rules for clearing streets in Collingwood

There's a pecking (plowing!) order for which streets get cleared first during and after a storm.

While today is mild and rainy, it is winter in Collingwood, and the town of Collingwood has implemented winter parking rules and issued a notice on winter road maintenance.

Now through March 31, there is a ban on street parking on municipal streets and parking lots from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. Vehicles parked in driveways must not encroach on sidewalks or roadways as it interferes with snow clearing.

The town is also asking residents to refrain from pushing snow from their properties and driveways into the sidewalks and streets.

When it comes to snow-clearing, the town website states there are six routes each made up of streets categorized by priority.

The first priority is for snowplows to clear arterial roads or secondary collector roads with the highest volume of traffic. These roads are used for access to business areas, fire, police, and the hospital.

Other roads are primarily residential or secondary routes and those are systematically plowed once the priority roads are clear.

The town’s streets are sanded when streets become slippery. The sanding routes prioritize highways and arterial roads such as Highway 26, Hurontario Street, and Mountain Road, then bus routes and other collector routes as well as town-owned parking lots. The third priority is for major intersections and inclines in residential areas. Priority sidewalks include those around schools, medical facilities, community safety zones, and business areas.

The notice on the town’s website and in the recent town newsletter also addresses the question of plows pushing piles of snow into the ends of driveways.

“The Town makes every attempt to minimize the amount of snow plowed into the driveways during its snow plowing operations; however it does not clear private driveways,” states the notice, adding it’s likely residents can expect to clear their driveway several times during and after storm events.

If you believe your street has been missed by the snowplows, or your boulevard or sod has been damaged, you can call 705-445-1351 to report it.
