Those wishing to weigh in on a proposed 19-home development for the Victoria Annex property can do so during the next council meeting.
The town is hosting a public meeting (virtually) on Jan. 25 during the council meeting, which starts at 5 p.m.
A developer is proposing a plan to use the building (formerly part of Victoria school) at 400 Maple Street by turning it into two units. The plan before council also includes four single-detached dwelling units, ten semi-detached units, and three townhouse units for a total of 19 homes on the property.
The existing building will remain. It was built in 1895 as an addition to the 1884-build school house. The school building was demolished in 1969, but the annex still stands and has been designated of “cultural heritage interest” by Collingwood Council.
Because of the bylaw in place, changes to the existing building will require written consent from council and heritage attributes such as the stone foundation, gables, and original door openings will have to be preserved by the builder.
Currently, the town’s zoning designation on the property allows for the full 19 units, but the developer is requesting permission for smaller lot sizes and a higher maximum lot coverage.
Because the request requires a change in zoning, the town is required to host a public meeting.
The development application, as well as subsequent studies and plans for stormwater management, urban design, servicing, heritage impact, geotechnical investigations, tree inventory, and landscaping, are available on the town website here.
To participate in the Jan. 25 public meeting, you can join the Zoom meeting following the instructions on the Jan. 25 council agenda here.
