OPP not yet releasing cause of death in apparent drownings of mother, daughter

A postmortem on both mother and daughter took place yesterday.

Though the postmortem exam has already taken place, police are not yet releasing the cause of death of a mother and daughter who died in a pool on Tuesday.

"There is no cause of death yet," said OPP Const. Martin Hachey, adding he will "hopefully" be able to release the cause of death next week.

Police have confirmed 34-year-old Xia Zhen (aka Tiffany Gong) and her 5-year-old daughter Chloe Gong of Markham were declared dead in hospital on Tuesday after it appeared they drowned in a pool in The Blue Mountains. Collingwood and Blue Mountains OPP along with The Blue Mountains Fire Department and Grey County EMS responded to a 911 call Tuesday (June 26) at 7:15 p.m. to Mountain Springs Resort for a report of two people drowned in a pool.

The family, including father Yitin Gong, were renting a condo at Mountain Springs. Yitin Gong said his wife and daughter headed to the pool ahead of him and he followed 10 minutes later, but by then they had both drowned.

Grey County EMS arrived first, but would not say if the mother and daughter were still in the pool on arrival. The Blue Mountains Fire Department arrived shortly after to assist paramedics with CPR. The mother and daughter were taken to Collingwood General and Marine Hospital via ambulance where they were pronounced dead.

According to police, a postmortem exam took place at the Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-OFPS) located in Toronto yesterday.
