Collingwood council voted to renew its contract with the OPP for policing in Collingwood for a total cost of $5.2 million in the 2019 budget.

Council voted in favour of renewing the contract for the next three years at the regular meeting on Jan. 28.

The existing OPP contract expired Dec. 31, 2018, but was extended one month to allow a new council to take office and hear a presentation from the contract bureau.

During the presentation by the OPP Policing Contract Bureau to the Strategic Initiatives Committee in Collingwood on Jan. 22, Linda Davis, a contract analyst, told Collingwood councillors OPP contracts province-wide total $1.134 billion with $401 million allocated to municipal policing resources like detachment staff and support positions, and $733 million for provincial and specialized response resources.

In Collingwood, the breakdown for the $5.2 million contract is $2.33 million for base services, $2.33 million for calls for service, $187,141 for overtime, $174,042 for contract enhancements, $186,702 for court security, and $27,907 for prisoner transportation.

The extension of the contract will also see detachment commander Mary Shannon continue to monitor the impact of growth on service levels.
