Ontario reports 2,421 new COVID cases Thursday

The latest updates also include 1,013 recoveries and nine deaths

Public Health Ontario is reporting 2,421 new COVID cases today.

The latest updates also include 1,013 recoveries and nine deaths.

The Dec. 16 updates provided by the province's public health agency and the ministry of health also reported the following data:

  • There are 14,065 active cases, up from 12,666 yesterday.
  • 328 people are in hospital testing positive for COVID-19.
  • Today's report includes 686 unvaccinated cases, 72 partially vaccinated cases, 1,530 fully vaccinated cases, and 133 cases with the vaccination status unknown. 
  • The seven-day average incidence rate by vaccination status is 20 cases per 100,000 unvaccinated people, 8.6 cases per 100,000 partially vaccinated people, and 8.3 cases per 100,000 fully vaccinated people.
  • 165 people are in ICU due to COVID-19. Of those, 147 people are testing positive and 18 are testing negative. There are 105 people in an intensive care unit (ICU) due to COVID on a ventilator.
  • Included in the hospitalized cases (not in the ICU) are 124 unvaccinated cases, seven partially vaccinated cases, and 72 fully vaccinated cases. 
  • ICU cases include 69 unvaccinated people, five partially vaccinated cases, and 24 fully vaccinated cases.
  • 11.3 million people in Ontario (77 per cent of the population) are fully vaccinated, and five per cent of the province has one dose of COVID vaccine.
  • 1.3 million people have received a booster since August 2021.
  • The province reported 54,724 tests were processed yesterday, resulting in a seven per cent positivity rate.
  • Cases reported in today's update include 33 from Grey-Bruce, 107 from Simcoe-Muskoka, 505 from Toronto, 143 from York Region, and 153 from Peel Region. 
  • Today's new cases include 81 newborns to four-year-olds, 297 kids ages five to 11, 241 youth between 12 and 19 years old, 938 people between 20 and 39 years old, 638 people between 40 and 59 years old, 186 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 36 people over 80 years old.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 639,341 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 615,174 recoveries and 10,102 deaths.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 4,339.2 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average seven-day incidence rate from Dec. 6 to Dec. 12 was 65 cases per 100,000 people, which is up by 37.1 per cent compared to the seven-day period starting on Nov. 30.

Simcoe-Muskoka 

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported 108 new COVID cases in its report Wednesday, Dec. 15.

There are currently 886 active cases in the region. 

Hospitalizations include 19 people from Simcoe County and two from Muskoka Region. Five people are in intensive care units. 

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 16,920 cases of COVID-19 with 15,751 of those cases recovered and 283 cases ending in death. 

The seven-day average incidence rate in Simcoe-Muskoka for the week of Dec. 6 was 95.1 cases, which is down six per cent compared to the week of Nov. 30. 

The seven-day average incidence rate in Grey-Bruce for the week of Dec. 6 was 39.7 cases, which is up 55.7 per cent compared to the week of Nov. 30.
