Ontario reports 2,243 new COVID cases Sunday

Today's update also includes 2,406 recoveries and 17 deaths

On May 1, Public Health Ontario is reporting 1,410 COVID-positive patients in hospital and 188 people in intensive care units with COVID. *note: not all hospitals report on weekends. 

There are 187 patients in ICU with COVID-related illness, but 34 of those individuals are no longer testing positive for COVID.

Public Health Ontario is also reporting 17 new deaths that occurred in the past month.

There are also 2,243 new COVID cases, although new case counts are underestimated as testing is limited. 

The May 1 updates provided by the province's public health agency and the ministry of health also reported the following data:

Cases

  • 2,406 recoveries and 17 deaths since yesterday's report. 
  • Among the latest cases, 1,441 of the individuals have received three doses, 431 have received two doses, 269 are not fully vaccinated and 102 have an unknown vaccination status.
  • Lab-confirmed testing is mostly limited to Indigenous people, hospitalized people, and those who live or work in high-risk congregate care settings. As such a majority of the people being tested are fully vaccinated as per provincial or workplace mandatory vaccine policies.

Hospitalizations

  • 1,410 people are in hospital testing positive for COVID-19. Of those, 42 per cent were hospitalized because of COVID-19 and the other 58 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for COVID. 
  • There are 153 patients in Ontario ICUs with COVID. Of those, 65 per cent were admitted because of COVID-19 and the other 35 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for COVID.
  • There are 71 COVID patients on ventilators.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 1,260,380 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic and reported 1,217,348 recoveries and 12,842 deaths.
