Are you looking for a place to focus on school assignments or do quiet work on your laptop? The Collingwood Public Library has a new study space just for you.

“The idea behind the study counter grew out of the survey we did when we were collecting information for the library’s strategic plan,” says Library CEO Ken Haigh. “One of our top responses was that people said they would like more quiet study space.”

Although there were several places in the library already devoted to quiet study, Haigh and his staff looked around the library to see where they could

include more. Since plans were underway to renovate the reference area on the second floor, the ability to include more seating and more power outlets for technology devices seemed like a good fit in that location.

The Frank Cowan Company Home Town Program, a program to help fund municipal-related community improvement projects, donated $5,000 and Secure Insurance Solutions Group donated $500 toward making the wired study counter a reality.

In the spring, local cabinet maker Gerald Lourie built the counter, creating six study spaces, two for genealogical research, one for a Service Ontario computer, and three for people bringing their own laptops.

The space has been available for the last month and staff have noticed that it has been in constant use.

Haigh loves how it turned out. “It’s a great addition to the second floor and is being used exactly how we hoped it would.”

The Collingwood Public Library is committed to guiding our community in the pursuit of information, the wonder of lifelong learning, and the enrichment of social and cultural experiences. At the heart of the community, the Collingwood Public Library is an inclusive environment seeking universal accessibility.
