Next week high school teachers nearby will again be striking for one day according to the Ontario Secondary School Teacher’s Federation (OSSTF).

On Jan. 15 teachers in the Bluewater District School Board, which includes Meaford and Thornbury, as well as some others in Ontario will be picketing for the day.

Teachers at high schools in 16 public school boards will participate in the full withdrawal of services.

Collingwood teachers will not be walking out on Jan. 15 as the Simcoe County District School Board is not included in the list sent out by OSSTF today.

OSSTF President Harvey Bischof stated, in a media release from the OSSTF, the teachers union made an effort to avoid the Jan. 15 strike.

“If the government agrees to return to, and maintain, the class size ratios and staffing levels that were in place just a year ago, we will call off our January 15 job action, and continue to bargain in good faith to resolve the many other outstanding issues,” said Bischof in the release.

Members of the OSSTF have withdrawn some services since Nov. 26. There have been one-day strikes since early December.

Yesterday, the Elementary Teacher’s Federation of Ontario announced its membership was planning rotating strikes beginning Jan. 20.

Teachers unions have been at the bargaining table with the province for most of the year, the current contracts began expiring in the summer.
