An investigation was called after a man who was detained in a cell at the Collingwood OPP detachment was injured.
However, since the man who was injured has declined to release his medical records, the investigation has been closed.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the organization charged with investigating incidents of injury, death, or allegations of sexual assault involving police - announced today it would not be proceeding with an investigation.
The man, 41, was taken into police custody on June 3, 2019, when he was arrested for impaired driving.
While he was in a cell at the Collingwood OPP detachment, he reportedly rammed his upper body into the bars of the cell, according to the SIU. He was taken to hospital for treatment.
Because the man was injured in police custody, the SIU was called in to investigate.
The interim director of the SIU, Joseph Martino, said because the man “declined to authorize the release of his medical records, the SIU could not confirm the nature and extent of the injuries he may have suffered.”
The file has been closed.
When an SIU investigation is called, the director is charged with finding out whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation. The director can lay a criminal charge, or close the file without any charges being laid.
Results of SIU investigations are reported to the Attorney General.
