Legion members honoured at annual luncheon

Local student who participated in poster, poem and essay contest competed at the national level this year, earning a second-place finish

On Sunday afternoon, Legion members, friends, family and local dignitaries filled Branch 63 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Collingwood for their annual Honours and Awards Luncheon to recognize the accomplishments of their members over the past year.

Members were recognized for five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 years of service, and some special awards were handed out.

Some of the winners of the Youth Education Poster, Poem and Essay program were also recognized. Daniel Syed, 14, wrote a poem for the intermediate poetry category. In April, he received second place at the dominion command level, which is a national level.

The Legionnaire of the Year Award, or the John McPherson Memorial Award, was bestowed on Burt Brennan, who was not in attendance.

The Lady of the Year award, presented to the Ladies Auxiliary executive of the year, was given to Joyce Hurst.
