Today the province and local governments want you to do more than think about litter.
May 12, 2020 is the first ever provincial day of action on litter.
According to a statement by the province’s minister of the environment, this is a day when all Ontarians can raise awareness and take action to reduce litter and waste at home.
The Town of Collingwood has also been posting to its website and social media channels today encouraging residents to help clean up the town.
“Keeping Collingwood clean and green is everyone’s responsibility,” states a post on the town’s website. “While the town does its part to keep the community litter-free, we need your help too.”
Under normal circumstances, the town would be facilitating community wide clean-up events, but that would involve gathering, which remains prohibited under COVID-19 restrictions.
Instead, the town is asking residents to take initiative on their own by picking up litter while out on a walk and reporting litter and waste “that has been rudely dumped” in the community.
The town and province are also encouraging proactive action on litter by suggesting waste diversion by composting, reusing containers for storage, and choosing to buy goods with less packaging.
If you’d like to participate in the province’s Day of Action on Litter, you can share your work on social media with the hashtag #ActONLitter.
