The Blue Mountains Chief Fire Prevention Officer, Duncan Rydall, presents a plaque expressing gratitude to the Thornbury Home Hardware for supporting fire prevention initiatives.

This weekend The Blue Mountains Chief Fire Prevention Officer presented an award of recognition to the Thornbury Home Hardware for an ongoing partnership supporting public education and fire prevention.

Chief FPO Duncan Rydall visited Thornbury Home Hardware on Saturday with the award, which recognizes several years of cooperation with the local hardware shop.

Not only does the store keep a stock of business cards listing contact information for the fire department's fire prevention office, staff also participate in connecting customers with fire prevention officers for help in choosing and installing smoke alarms.

Rydall said the store moved its retail display of smoke alarms to a spot across from the service desk, so if a customer is lingering there, staff can suggest the customer contact the fire prevention office.

The Blue Mountains Fire Department has a fire prevention officer on shift seven days a week, and can help anyone select an alarm that will be best for them. Officers are also known to help with installation.

"This program has been running for a couple of years and today was just a great opportunity to recognize one of our partners in fire safety," said Rydall in an email on Saturday.

If you have questions about smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and other fire safety for the home, you can reach a fire prevention officer by phone at 519-599-3131, ext. 105 and/or via email to [email protected].
