The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 66 new COVID-19 cases and the death of a Bradford West Gwillimbury resident in today's update (April 27).
There are 1,331 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.
The health unit has reported 3,088 variant cases confirmed to date, with 955 of those cases still active.
Dr. Charles Gardner, medical officer of health for the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, said he received a communication from Public Health Ontario on the weekend indicating there is a local case of the B.1.617 variant that is widespread in India. Gardner said he has asked for more specifics and is awaiting a reply from Public Health Ontario.
The variant is new in Ontario, with about three dozen confirmed cases. This would be the first case of the B.1.617 variant confirmed in Simcoe-Muskoka.
Community cases, which are those that have been investigated by the health unit but no transmission source could be confirmed, are at their highest level for the region accounting for 30.9 per cent of the new cases coming in. These cases are listed as "community-acquired" or "community transmission."
Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 10,154 cases of COVID-19 with 8,156 of those cases recovered and 222 cases ending in death.
There are 50 people from Simcoe County and two people from Muskoka hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes six new hospitalizations since yesterday.
To date, 175,824 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of a vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 28 per cent of the region's population.
The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise noted):
- Clearview (3): One person between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and one person over 79 years old. Two cases are outbreak-related.
- Wasaga Beach (2): One person between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case was community-acquired.
- Barrie (14): Eight people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, two people between 45 and 64 years old, two people between 65 and 79 years old. One case is linked to close contact, and one was community-acquired.
- Springwater (1): One person between 65 and 79 years old.
- Innisfil (6): Two youth under 18 years old, two people between 18 and 34 years old, and two people between 45 and 64 years old.
- Bradford West Gwillimbury (26): Five youth under 18 years old, six people between 18 and 34 years old, four people between 35 and 44 years old, nine people between 45 and 64 tears old, and two people between 65 and 79 years old. One case is outbreak-related, nine were community-acquired, and 26 were linked to close contact.
- Tiny (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old.
- Essa (3): One person between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is attributed to community transmission.
- New Tecumseth (10): Three people between 18 and 34 years old, four people between 35 and 44 years old, and three people between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases were linked to close contact, three were community-acquired.
