Prepare to be captivated on Nov. 10 by an evening of riveting theatre as Owen Sound’s Harmony Centre proudly presents a special, one-night-only performance of Billy Bishop Goes to War.

This powerful winner of the Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama — written by John MacLachlan Gray in collaboration with actor Eric Peterson — takes you on a journey through the life and experiences of Owen Sound’s famous son, the legendary Canadian World War 1 flying ace, William Avery “Billy” Bishop.

This extraordinary production, starring the talented Matt Evans as Billy Bishop and accompanied by Michael Mulrooney on piano, weaves a narrative that explores the challenges, fears, and triumphs of a young man thrust into the epicentre of one of the world’s most devastating conflicts. Through humour, drama, and song, the play presents an intimate look at Bishop’s journey from a hometown boy and eager young pilot to becoming one of the most successful and decorated aces of his time.

The one-night-only Harmony Centre performance will take place on the eve of this year’s Remembrance Day, which adds relevance to the story as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served Canada during times of war.

Matt Evans, who portrays more than a dozen characters in the production, says audiences can expect an unforgettable evening filled with storytelling that transcends generations.

“This story honours the indomitable spirit of Billy Bishop,” he says. “It reminds us of the courage and resilience of those who answered the call and left the comfort of small-town Canada to fight tyranny abroad.”

Billy Bishop Goes to War is part of the Harmony Centre’s Ten-for-Ten Series — 10 events celebrating 10 years as a cultural presence in Owen Sound. The performance is sponsored by Van Dolder’s Home Team.

Don’t miss this evening of history, heroism, and the indomitable human spirit on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Harmony Centre, 890 4th Ave. E., Owen Sound. Tickets are available online for $30 at www.harmonycentre.ca, or pay what you can at the door on the evening of the performance.

The Harmony Centre is a charitable organization maintained and run by volunteers.
