Grey Bruce Health Unit's team is ready for the third with its hockey hub model.

Third dose, that is.

The health unit announced yesterday it will work again with Bruce Power, local partners, and volunteers to re-establish its mass vaccination clinics using the hockey hub model developed in the spring.

"This partnership will enable a large volume of COVID-19 vaccines to be administered in the coming weeks and help defend against the omicron variant," states a news release from the health unit.

Bruce Power has been offering support to the Grey Bruce Health Unit and the entire region since the start of the pandemic, offering personal protective supplies and providing resources and logistical support for vaccination clinics.

The nuclear energy producer helped convert the three community centres in Hanover, Kincardine, and Owen Sound into mass immunization hubs.

The health unit operated those hubs with the potential to vaccinate 4,000 to 5,000 people per day on a ten-hour shift requiring five vaccinators.

Bruce Power also provided logistical support for an immunization hub for Lambton Public Health and donated freezers to Grey Bruce Health Unit and Huron Public Health to help with the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine roll out.

According to a news release posted by Bruce Power, the company has provided 2.5 million pieces of PPE to frontline workers, businesses, Indigenous communities and schools and spent $1 million on public education efforts, community protection, shop local initiatives and charitable support.

Grey Bruce Health Unit also received PPE acquisition and distribution support from Chapman's Ice Cream, and help to get the right kind of freezer for the vaccine and safety tips for using the deep freezer.

Starting Monday, anyone aged 18 or older who is double vaccinated can now receive a third, booster dose three months after their second dose.

Further details will be announced on the Grey Bruce clinics by the health unit once the sites are selected and set up.

COVID-19 vaccines continue to be available through scheduled vaccine clinics, as well as through participating pharmacies and primary care providers. Please contact your health care provide or visit their website to find out whether they are offering the COVID-19 vaccines.

You can also book an appointment through the province's vaccine booking system. More appointments are added regularly, so if there are none available, you can check again later.
