Collingwood staff are currently working on flushing the town's hydrants as part of regular maintenance of the town's water system.

According to the town website this process occurs in the spring and fall in order to cover the entire water distribution network, which includes water mains ranging in size from 100 to 600 mm in diameter.

"Sediment and deposits naturally occur over time and if not removed can cause water quality deterioration, including discolouration, taste, and odour problems," states the town's website. "We flush water mains annually, and all dead-end hydrants as required to remove these deposits – ensuring high water quality and adequate disinfection residuals are maintained. Chlorine residuals and flowing pressure readings are taken at each hydrant while flushing is taking place."

Fall maintenance also includes checking and lubricating the hydrant ports, installing hydrant markers, replacing or making repairs to hydrants, and any other work related to keeping the hydrants operational all year long.

The statement from the town suggests tap water could be discoloured or contain sediment if it is used during flushing of a nearby water main. Residents experiencing discoloured water should shut the tap off and wait for about an hour. Check for clarity by running cold water for a few minutes.

If you have any other concerns, call the water department at 705-445-1581 Ext. 3320.
