Fake history, fish fry, Salsa dancing round out weekend events near Collingwood

Enjoy a long, sunny day today, and check out these weekend options for family-friendly activities.

St. George’s Anglican Garden Party
This annual tradition (the first one was July 12, 1880) is a full-day event including a plant sale, and a fish fry in the evening. Plants are grown in the greenhouse at Meaford’s elementary school. Plants go on sale at 7:15 a.m on June 22. There is a giant yard sale from 9 a.m. to noon, and the fish fry begins at 4:30 p.m. and runs to 7 with enough dinner for 600 guests. Tickets for the dinner are $20 for adults or $10 for kids. Fish Fry tickets are available at Thornbury Pharmasave and at the church office in Clarksburg (519-599-3047).

St. George's Anglican Church is located in Clarksburg at 166 Russell Street East.

Some Fake History
The Collingwood museum is hosting a public lecture by Toronto podcaster Sebastian Major who will be giving a talk called Lend Me Your Ears! Podcasting as the New Public History.
Major is the creator and host of a podcast called Our Fake History, wherein he explores historical myths and misconceptions from King Arthur to who invented your favourite food.

The event begins at 7 p.m. at the museum, and admission is by donation (suggested $5). Spaces are limited and can be reserved online here.

Collingwood Farmers’ Market
Check out the Collingwood Farmers’ Market, which opens at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday in the Pine Street Parking lot. Local food for sale from vendors across the region.

Salsa at Blue
Starting today and running through Sunday, the Village at Blue Mountain will be a celebration of Latin music, dance, and culture for the annual Salsa at Blue Festival. There’s live music and dancing on the events plaza stage. The event is free to attend, and public events are family-friendly. More here.

Aesop’s Fables
Back in Clarksburg again, there’s a family-friendly show featuring the famous Aesop’s fables performed by a cast directed by Dean Hollin, and featuring comedy and music. The first of eight performances takes place on June 22 at 4 p.m. at the Marsh Street Centre in Clarksburg. Tickets are $10 for kids and $15 for adults, available at www.marshstreetcentre.com. Prior to the show, kids are welcome to the Marsh Street Centre from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the Artsburg Children’s Festival.

Go to the Ball
The Georgian Triangle Humane Society is hosting its annual Furball Gala on Saturday, June 22, at the Craigleith Ski Club. The evening includes a formal dinner and live music. This year’s theme is Denim and Diamonds. The event begins at 6 p.m. and tickets are $150, with proceeds going to the operation of the GTHS. Click here for more.
