NEWS RELEASE
TOWN OF COLLINGWOOD
*************************
The Collingwood Museum is offering a lineup of exciting activities and programs in celebration of museums and all they offer to our communities.

From a travelling exhibit from the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 to free admission and extended hours, there’s something for everyone.

May is Museum Month, kicked off in Collingwood with a proclamation by Mayor Yvonne Hamlin on May 1 that identifies museums as key contributors to their respective communities and the province of Ontario at large. Not only are museums local tourism assets, but they are also trusted community hubs that provide the benefits of culture, heritage, and local vitality as trusted public institutions that offer resources for education and learning. Read the full proclamation here.

Mayor Hamlin’s proclamation will be followed by the illumination of the town hall clock and the Collingwood Museum’s iconic tower in purple between May 18 and 25.

For the second year in a row, the May episode of the museum’s popular podcast, Stories from Another Day, will feature a museum-themed story. Listen to The One that Flew Away and learn about a stuffed passenger pigeon that was on display at the Huron Institute, the Collingwood Museum’s predecessor, until disaster struck in 1963. Listen now on Spotify or your favourite podcast provider.

In celebration of International Museum Day on Thursday, May 18, the Collingwood Museum will be offering free admission and extended hours from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Members of the museum advisory committee will be on site for an informal meet-and-greet between 4 and 5 p.m. Podcast host Ken Maher will also be on site to chat about the Stories from Another Day podcast and answer questions. Attendees will also have the chance to learn about membership opportunities, check out new items in the gift shop, and view Refuge Canada Tent, a travelling exhibit from the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21.

The Refuge Canada Tent exhibit raises awareness of the complex issues surrounding the history of refugees in Canada. Drawing on oral histories, archival images and interactives, this immersive exhibit serves as an introduction to Canada’s historical and current place in the global refugee crisis. The exhibit is designed to resemble a tent and is the same size as a typical shelter used in refugee camps today. Please be advised that Refuge Canada Tent contains sensitive images and stories of refugee experiences, which may evoke emotions, questions, and discussions.

For up-to-date information on activities throughout the month of May, follow the Collingwood Museum on Facebook or visit www.collingwood.ca/museum.
