Collingwood council has approved a demolition permit for the remains of the Sporting Life building on Hurontario Street, which was largely destroyed by fire.
Council approved the permit last night (March 4) during a special council meeting. The permit request previously went through the Collingwood Heritage Committee, who also approved the application.
The motion from the heritage committee, and approved by council, made note of the south wall shared with 220 Hurontario Street (Lux Vape and apartments), and said demolition work should take care not to compromise the integrity of the wall.
Sporting Life caught fire on Jan. 27, and burned through the night and into the morning. The building partially collapsed as a result of the fire, and has been taped and boarded since then while crews worked inside.
The cause of the fire has not been announced.
The fire also displaced the residents of three apartments in the adjacent building to the south and the Lux Vape business, which reopened across the road.
Sporting Life officials have stated they would like to reopen a store in Collingwood, but have not announced plans yet on where and when that store will open.
