Community offers condolences to family of man shot by police last week

An obituary posted online has drawn wishes of condolences and expressions of grief from those who knew the man who was shot by police last week in Collingwood. 

Matthew Rice, 29, died after a confrontation with police on Sept. 9 at a home on Third Street. 

A brief obituary posted online notes his body has been cremated and there will be no formal service. The obituary states he will be deeply missed by those who loved him. 

Photos of Rice as a boy are posted with the obituary. Notes posted on the notice express heartbreak and condolences to the family. One post from Rice's co-workers says they will remember him fondly. 

The Special Investigations Unit has been called in to investigate the circumstances surrounding Rice's death. Police went to a home on the corner of Third and Beech Streets at 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 9 after receiving a report of a man who was barricaded in the house. 

According to police reports, Rice came out of the house with a gun. In a confrontation, a police officer used a conducted energy weapon on Rice, but reported it was ineffective. The same officer shot Rice. He was taken to hospital, and he died.
