The CIBC Run for the Cure is back for its second post-COVID event this October.

Runners from across Collingwood, Town of the Blue Mountains, Wasaga Beach, Thornbury, Creemore and Midland will be congregating at Blue Mountain Village on Oct. 1 for the South Georgian Bay leg of the CIBC Run for the Cure.

Collingwood-area team leader Kayla McQueen says typically, between 200 and 500 people participate in the Collingwood-area run annually. This year’s fundraising goal is $75,000.

“Our event is back and we want people to come out and show their support, whether it’s participating in the run, or coming out to cheer on participants from the sidelines,” she said.

The annual event raises funds for the Canadian Cancer Society for research and local community programs. The CIBC Run for the Cure has three mandates: fund ground-breaking breast cancer research, shape health policies, and provide a national support system for breast cancer fighters and survivors.

“While money is part of the reason why we host events like this...is to be able to bring people together who have experienced the same thing,” said McQueen. “It’s to create a sense of togetherness for people and to support each other.”

This year’s festivities kick off with registration at 8 a.m., opening ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. with the walk starting at 10 a.m. Runners can choose between a five-kilometre or one-kilometre hike.

Both teams and participants are eligible to win awards and rewards.

“They can run, walk, bring strollers, bring dogs – whatever’s easiest,” said McQueen.

While it is free to sign up for the run, participants are encouraged to try to raise at least $150 for the cause through pledges.
