The Collingwood Blues Junior A hockey team announced the promotion of the team's assistant coach to head coach in the wake of the former head coach's resignation.

Rob Bentivegna posted a statement on his Twitter account yesterday (Dec. 19) announcing he resigned effective immediately.

Bentivegna cited a "disconnection" between himself and the club for "roster construction, player personnel, and ultimately, the goals of the hockey team," as factors for his resignation.

Terry Geddes, chair of the Blues board of directors, said the resignation was a mutual agreement and follows a "slump" for the team.

The Blues hired Bentivegna in April, 2020.

The Blues posted a statement announcing Andrew Campoli as the interim head coach. Campoli has been working as the assistant coach and joined the team prior to the current season start.

Campoli was previously the head coach with the Stouffville Spirit.

General manager Mike Tarantino said in the team's statement Campoli has the tools to excel in the position and already works daily with the Blues on and off the ice.

Campoli thanked Bentivegna for his work with the players, in the community, and for the Blues organization.

"I truly wish him nothing but the best," said Campoli in the statement. "I'm excited to take over as head coach for the Blues. We do have a dressing room full of passionate, committed and hard-working players."
