The Collingwood Climate Action Team (CCAT) is challenging local communities to ‘Walk the Talk for Earth Day’ and join in celebrating a day that has increasing significance with our changing climate and the need to take action.

CCAT is hosting its spring community gathering online on Thursday, April 21 from 7:30 to 8:30 pm.

Special guest Rebecca Babcock will be discussing ‘What is a Carbon Footprint and Why Does it Matter?' Rebecca, the project co-ordinator for Project Neutral’s ‘Talk Climate to Me’ program, will share her insight into how we begin the conversation about climate change, recognizing that the first step we need to take is to begin talking about the issue.

The event will also feature Bones Watene, the designer of Collingwood’s Earth Day 2022 flag, who will bring the message of inclusivity imprinted on the flag, which bears the message ‘Let’s Heal the World Together.’

Community members who have been participating in CCAT’s Community Carbon Footprint Challenge will share what they have learned and have been doing to lessen their footprint and live more sustainably, helping to preserve our environment for future generations.

Actions like reducing the fossil fuels needed to heat their homes, using active transportation for shorter trips, eating more plant-based meals, and reducing their waste by composting and making more planet-friendly shopping purchases are just some of the steps participants have already taken.

CCAT has over 200 participants on more than 25 teams from area businesses, organizations and neighbourhood groups participating in the Footprint Challenge. This event will be a chance to recognize those taking part and aims to inspire others to also join.

Registration for ‘Walk the Talk for Earth Day’ event, which will be held online, is free and can be done at collingwoodclimateaction.com/events/

CCAT will also be taking part in the Earth Day flag raising and Community Clean-up kickoff being held at the Library on Friday, April 22 at 2:45 p.m. Community members are encouraged to walk, ride, take public transit or carpool to this event and celebrate Earth Day.
