The Town of Collingwood announced a renovation project for the pool at Centennial Aquatic Centre, which will close the pool for the summer.

Currently, the concrete pool gets closed and re-painted once a year, which typically takes place in August. This year, however, the pool will be tiled thanks to a grant from the provincial government and the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

The grant of $394,000 will cover the cost of the project, but the pool will be closed starting June 27. A news release from the town indicates the work will be complete and the pool reopened in the early fall.

According to town spokesperson Christa Carter, summer is the least busy season for the community pool.

The Collingwood Clippers will be hosting an end-of-year swim meet on June 25 and 26 before the pool closes.

Mel Milanovic, manager of the town's recreation facilities, said in a news release the tiles will be more durable than the paint.

"We will be able to keep our pool cleaner and usable all year long, as tiling the pool will eliminate the need to close annually for cleaning and painting," said Milanovic in the release.

The community pool at Centennial Aquatic Centre was formerly an outdoor pool, but was covered in 2013 by a fabric membrane structure. The pool was built more than 50 years ago.
