Bidding open for Victoria School Annex property

Bids will be accepted until July 15 at 5 p.m.

Have $1? You could own the Victoria School Annex.

The property, located at 500 Maple Street in Collingwood, is up for sale by bid due to the owners being in receivership. According to Realtor.ca, bids are due by July 18 at 5 p.m. The list price is $1.

The Annex building and property is in need of repairs, however. There are current sanctions on the property under the town’s property standards bylaw and the town has indicated a desire to have the building designated under the Ontario Heritage Act as recently as May 2018.

The building, completed in 1895, has been empty since 2004. In 2007, previous property owners applied for demolition, but were not given a permit as the town started pursuing heritage designation for the building at that time.

In 2015, the town commissioned a heritage designation report for the Annex to see if it met the criteria to be designated under the Ontario Heritage Act.

The Murdoch report concluded the Annex was a suitable candidate for heritage designation, but suggested waiting until the current site plan application was resolved because it included a severance application. The heritage designation would only apply to the parcel of property that contained the Annex building. Otherwise, the heritage designation would apply to the full property at 400 Maple Street.

The property currently has zoning in place to allow residential development.
