The Collingwood Downtown business association is bringing back its commemorative veteran banner program this year, once again in support of the local Legion's poppy campaign.

The Collingwood Downtown BIA started a banner program in 2018, on the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, to recognize local veterans. The banners featured pictures of the men and women who became soldiers and medical personnel during the world wars and other conflicts.

Banner production and installation costs are covered by the BIA. The veteran photo and information is supplied by the veteran's family and descendants, who are also asked to contribute a $100 donation to the Royal Canadian Legion Collingwood branch's poppy fund.

The same process will carry forward for the 2021 program.

According to a news release from the BIA, families have supplied information and donations for 95 banners so far.

"Branch 63 of the Legion (Collingwood) is very excited about this continuing program," said Donald Wilcox, public relations officer at the Collingwood Legion, in a news release. "This town is so lucky to have an organization such as the BIA to help keep the memory of those who fought and did and those who fought and came home to build a better country."

BIA general manager Susan Nicholson said the banners will feature veterans of all wars, and encouraged individuals, families, and businesses to recognize a veteran through the banner program.

"It is a conscientious effort to recognize the sacrifice made by many members of our community," said Nicholson in the news release.
