Head out to your favourite fishing spot and drop a line in the water for free for the next week.

To celebrate Canada Day, the Ontario government is offering free week-long free fishing for Canadian residents from July 1 to 9. It's the last free fishing event for 2023 in the province.

“To help families celebrate Canada Day, we’re making it easier to get out on the water and experience the world-class fishing opportunities that exist in Ontario,” said Graydon Smith, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, in a news release. “Fishing is a fun and affordable way for families to enjoy quality time, while connecting with nature.”

Right now, you can fish for many species, including yellow perch, common carp, northern pike, lake trout and walleye. Be sure to follow the conservation licence limits on how many fish you can keep and other regulations. More information is available in the Fishing Regulations Summary.

If you are taking part, you must have a government-issued ID showing your name and date of birth.
