62 new COVID cases confirmed in region today, one in Collingwood

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 62 new COVID-19 cases and one death in today's update (May 20). 

The death reported today was a man from Muskoka between 45 and 64 years old who died on May 13. 

There are 652 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

In the Simcoe-Muskoka, 242 cases have ended in death since March 2020.

The health unit has reported 4,303 variant cases confirmed to date, with 505 of those cases still active. Two cases have been confirmed as the B.1.617.2 variant strain, which is the one spreading across India right now. 

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 11,554 cases of COVID-19 with 10,109 of those cases recovered. 

There are 28 people from Simcoe County and two from Muskoka District hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes five new hospitalizations since yesterday.

To date, 263,761 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 43.6 per cent of the region's population and more than 50 per cent of the region's adult population. About four per cent of the population has received two doses of vaccine.

In Simcoe County, 230,737 residents (42.9 per cent of the population) have received one dose of vaccine, and 21,134 (3.9 per cent) have received two doses.

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified).

  • Collingwood (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old. 
  • Clearview (1): One youth under 18 years old. 
  • Springwater (2): One person between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 35 and 44 years old. Both cases are listed as community-acquired. 
  • Barrie (10): Five people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, three people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person over 79 years old. Two cases linked to close contact transmission, three are listed as community-acquired, and one is outbreak-related.
  • Innisfil (5): Two youth under 17 years old, one person between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. three cases are linked to close contact transmission. 
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (16): Five youth under 18 years old, seven people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and three people between 45 and 64 years old. Five cases are linked to close contact transmission and two are listed as community-acquired. 
  • Orillia (7): Two youth under 18 years old, three people between 18 and 34 years old, and two people between 45 and 64 years old. Six cases are linked to close contact transmission. 
  • Penetanguishene (7): Three people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, and two people between 45 and 64 years old. Six cases are outbreak-related. 
  • New Tecumseth (11): Four youth under 18 years old, two people between 18 and34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and four people between 45 and 64 years old. Four cases are listed as community-acquired, and three are linked to close contact. 
  • Essa (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old.  
  • There is one new case in Gravenhurst, it is the only case listed for Muskoka today.

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on May 20).
