I am pleased to read several letters to the editor about key issues happening in Collingwood. People in this community really care about the present and future of this town. Some of the issues were rebuilding Sixth Street, the value of our street trees, and traffic safety issues like speeding in our neighbourhoods.

If you are like me, and walk and cycle in Collingwood, you will be very familiar with these issues. I believe we are at a tipping point in our community with respect to the serious traffic speed and volume dangers on local streets, the lack of safe streets for cyclists, the disappearing urban tree canopy, and the overall livability of our neighbourhoods.

We need real action on these issues in 2024.

I am optimistic that our current council understands these issues and is ready to support bold, forward-thinking change this year. I am one of many citizens eagerly awaiting the master mobility and transportation plan currently being completed.

Also, a town-wide speed-reduction plan is being finalized. I trust that this plan will return our local streets to people and homeowners and not be overrun by high-speed ‘shortcut’ drivers looking to save seconds on their cross-town commute.

Finally, let’s work together as a community — town staff, council, community groups, and citizens — to fill empty boulevards and front yards with trees to invest in the future livability and sustainability of this community.
