Editor,

Congratulations are due to the council of Grey Highlands for including enough money in their 2023 draft budget to fund its climate promises.

Up to now, the municipal council has talked a good game. In 2019, it declared a climate crisis and committed to a program to reduce its corporate greenhouse gas emissions.

However, subsequent budgets did not fund the commitment. We all know that without funding, promises are empty.

If the draft budget passes, $50,000 will now be available. Climate-concerned Grey Highlanders are hoping that similar amounts will be allocated in future budgets to ensure the completion of the program. Entitled Partners for Climate Protection, it takes municipalities through five milestones ending in substantial greenhouse gas emission reductions. Participation is considered key in accumulating the know-how and establishing a standard for the transition of the wider community.

Great start, Grey Highlands. Keep it up!
