History

Simcoe Peer Support for Mental Health and Addictions, formerly known as the Mental Health Consumer Survivor Project, was started by Judy Bell and a group of other consumers of mental health services in 1994. Consumer survivor initiatives became a movement back in the early 90’s as a way for those dealing with mental health and/or addictions to take control of their mental health care. Consumer/survivor initiatives made it possible to access help through peer support and self-help that wasn’t in a clinical setting. To this end the model of these initiatives is that they are 100% consumer driven including staffing and board of directors. This model has changed through the years.
