The region's health unit has reported zero new COVID-19 cases in Simcoe-Muskoka, today.
This is the first time since August 14 the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has confirmed a case-free day.
Overall, the region is on an “upward trajectory” when it comes to COVID-19 cases, as the area medical officer of health Dr. Charles Gardner noted yesterday during a media briefing.
There have been 25 new cases confirmed since August 25.
"I think it's worth noting this is a very substantial increase in our case count," said Gardner. "We haven't had a weekly increase of this magnitude since June 21."
Gardner said the health unit has investigated four "family clusters" in Barrie recently, all leading to lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19.
“People need to be very careful, even with family members,” said Gardner. “People need to stick to their social circles. … I know it’s completely contrary to people’s nature.”
There are currently two long-term care outbreaks in the region, including Mill Creek Care Centre in Barrie (declared Aug. 24) and The Pines Long-Term Care Residence in Bracebridge (declared Aug. 30). For both outbreaks, there is a single staff case confirmed and no other tests have come back with positive results.
The Mill Creek outbreak is reported on the second floor of the facility and all staff and residences have been tested with negative results.
Though there are no new cases confirmed today, one more person has been hospitalized in Barrie with COVID-19. There are now two people hospitalized in Barrie with the coronavirus.
