School boards not ready to cancel graduation ceremonies yet

Local boards waiting to learn when schools will reopen before making decision on end-of-year ceremonies

While some schools in the region have called off their proms due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no decisions have been made about whether to go ahead with graduation ceremonies.

The Simcoe County District School Board will be meeting Wednesday, and the topic might come up at that time, said chair Jodi Lloyd.

With the province having extended its state of emergency until May 12, the goal of reopening schools on May 4 is off the table. The school board will wait for an update from the province before making a decision about graduation ceremonies.

“We don’t want to be premature and cancel these things,” Lloyd said.

The Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board is taking a similar approach.

Spokesperson Pauline Stevenson noted the decision about whether to cancel proms is being made on a case-by-case basis as those events are held at different times of the year. Some schools have already called them off.

A decision on graduation ceremonies will depend on when the province expects to reopen schools.

The York Region District School Board announced Friday it was postponing all graduation ceremonies and cancelling all proms.
