Retirement home recreates wedding dinner for couple's 72nd anniversary

The Collingwood couple celebrated their anniversary with a wedding feast, the only thing missing was the 500 wedding guests

Ruth and Sam Erina tied the knot in front of 500 guests, but their 72nd wedding anniversary was quite a bit smaller.

The Collingwood couple are residents at Chartwell Georgian Traditions, and expected their special day would pass quietly, as many celebrations must during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Deb McCannell, retirement living consultant for Georgian Traditions, said the staff at the retirement home got creative for a special anniversary celebration. Chef Wayne Pigeon and his team recreated the exact menu from the Erinas' wedding day 72 years ago, including roasted squash and pumpkin soup, chicken and gravy, and a two-tier wedding cake.

Their friends at the retirement home and staff presented them with a giant card of good wishes, taking care to keep their distance.

“Everyone here was caught up in the romance and pitched-in to go above and beyond to celebrate this occasion for Ruth and Sam. Our staff is dedicated to making sure our residents know they are loved and appreciated, now and always,” said McCannell.

The Erinas spent their honeymoon on Toronto and Centre Island.

When they were asked what was the secret to a lasting love, Mr. and Mrs. Erina answered the same: "supporting each other."
