Ontario reports record 3,328 new COVID cases today

The province reported 56 deaths and 107 new hospitalizations today

Public Health Ontario has reported a record 3,328 new COVID-19 cases today. It is the first time the province has reported case counts in the 3,000s. 

The province has also indicated a jump in the number of tests processed for today's report with 63,858 tests completed compared to between 34,00 and 41,000 over the past five days. 

The province reported 56 deaths in today's update. Of those, 39 were residents of long-term care homes. One of the deaths reported was an individual between 20 and 39 years old, one was between 40 and 59 years old, 17 were between 60 and 79 years old, and 37 were over the age of 80. 

Since yesterday, 107 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19, and 25 COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units.

Today's update provided by the province's public health agency today also reported the following:

  • 2,213 new recoveries 
  • 1,235 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 1,177 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 337 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 323 yesterday) and 210 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 204 yesterday)
  • 21,617 current active cases in Ontario, which is up from 20,558 reported yesterday
  • The province has reported 63,858 tests have been processed for today's update, resulting in a 5.7 per cent positivity rate. The province's goal is three per cent. 
  • Of the 3,328 cases reported today, 888 are from Toronto, 431 are from Peel, 418 are from York Region, and 83 are from Simcoe-Muskoka.
  • Based on case data reported today, the new cases include 465 people under 20, 1,123 people between 20 and 39 years old, 1,037 people between 40 and 59 years old, 502 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 200 people over the age of 80.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 182,159 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 156,012 recoveries and 4,530 deaths, of which 2,777 were individuals living in long-term care homes

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 1,225.5 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario. The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 103 cases per 100,000 people from Dec. 21 to Dec. 27, which is down by 4.2 per cent compared to Dec. 15-21 when the average weekly incidence rate was 107.5 cases per 100,000 people.

Yesterday, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported 56 new cases of COVID-19 in the region.

The local health unit has now confirmed 3,519 cases of COVID-19 with 2,496 of those cases recovered and 64 cases ending in death. There are more than 900 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the region, with the majority of those in Simcoe County.

There are at least 27 people from Simcoe County hospitalized. 

Approximately half of all new infections reported by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit in December were linked to close contact with another case. About 20 per cent were reported as community-acquired, which means there is no known source of infection.

The province will not be providing COVID-19 updates on Jan. 1. Data will be posted the following day. 

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit will post an update this afternoon (Dec. 31) but will not post another one until Jan. 4.
