Public Health Ontario has reported 1,983 new cases of COVID-19 today, which is the highest number of cases ever reported in a day.
The last record number of cases was reported on Monday, Dec. 7 with 1,925 new cases.
Due to technical issues, the province hasn't included new hospitalizations in today's report
The latest update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following:
- 35 deaths reported, including one person between 40 and 59 years old, five people between 60 and 79 years old, and 28 people over the age of 80. Of the deaths reported today, 24 were residents of long-term care homes.
- 1,804 new recoveries
- 139 new school-related cases
- 10 schools in the province are currently closed because of COVID-19 cases and 878 Ontario schools have one or more confirmed case of COVID-19 reported
- Of the 1,983 cases reported today, 515 are from Peel, 496 are from Toronto, and 208 are from York Region
- 16,233 current active cases in Ontario
- 61,809 tests complete since last report, producing a 3.6 per cent positivity rate (the lowest since Dec. 5)
- 829 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 811 yesterday
- There are 228 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 221 yesterday) and 132 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 129 yesterday)
Public Health Ontario has confirmed 134,783 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 114,679 of those recovered and 3,871 deaths.
The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 906.7 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario. The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 85.1 cases per 100,000 people from Nov. 30 to Dec. 6.
The province announced this morning it is extending its emergency orders related to COVID-19 prevention and control measures to Jan. 20.
Yesterday afternoon the Simcoe Muskoka District Health unit reported 61 new cases of COVID-19 in the region.
The local has now confirmed 2,519 cases of COVID-19 with 2,070 of those cases recovered and 53 cases ending in death. There are more than 350 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Simcoe County.
There are at least 13 people from Simcoe County hospitalized. But the health unit has noted a lag in its reporting of hospitalizations.
There have been 2,410 cases confirmed in just Simcoe County, with 1,975 of those now recovered 52 deaths.
The seven-day average incidence rate for Simcoe-Muskoka region is 45 cases per 100,000 people.
