Public Health Ontario has confirmed 1,050 new cases of COVID-19 today, the highest number of cases reported in a single day to date.
The previous daily case record was set a little over a week ago with 1,042 cases reported on Oct. 25. The highest number of cases reported in a single day during the first wave was 749 cases on April 17.
The province has also confirmed 14 deaths today, including six people between 60 and 79 years old and eight people over the age of 80. Eight of the people who died were residents in long-term care homes.
There have been 30 people hospitalized with the coronavirus since yesterday and two COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care since yesterday's report. The province's public health agency has noted 837 recoveries in today's summary.
According to a breakdown of today's 1,050 cases, Ontario's four hot spot regions reported 730 cases, including 408 from Toronto, 212 from Peel, 76 from York and 34 from Ottawa. However, other regions not in Stage 2 modified restrictions have reported more than 50 new cases for today's report. Durham Region reported 57 new cases and Halton reported 86 cases.
About 65 per cent of the cases reported (677 cases) today are individuals between 20 and 59 years old.
The province has confirmed 25,279 tests have been processed since yesterday's update and there are 20,758 tests awaiting processing. Ontario labs have now processed 5.2 million COVID tests. The per cent positivity rate for Ontario is four per cent as of yesterday's data.
Of the current 8,295 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, there are 357 people hospitalized with the virus. There are 73 COVID patients in intensive care units and 47 COVID patients on ventilators.
Since the start of the pandemic, Public Health Ontario has confirmed 78,705 cases of COVID-19 and reported 67,244 recoveries and 3,166 deaths.
The average incidence rate in Ontario is 529.5 cases per 100,000 people.
In the local region, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported a total of 1,429 cases of COVID-19, with 1,348 of those in Simcoe County. There are 1,166 cases listed as recovered. Six people are currently hospitalized. The health unit has recorded 50 deaths.
The incidence rate for Simcoe County is 255 cases per 100,000 people.
