Ontario confirms 1,677 new COVID cases today

The province has also reported 16 deaths and 77 new hospitalizations today

Public Health Ontario has reported 1,677 new cases of COVID-19 today (Dec. 13).

The province reported 16 deaths in today's update, including six people between 60 and 79 years old, and 10 people over the age of 80. Of the deaths reported today, 10 were residents of long-term care homes.

Since yesterday's report, 77 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 and 15 COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units

The latest update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following: 

  • 1,678 new recoveries 
  • 813 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 855 yesterday
  • There are 253 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 237 yesterday) and 142 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 143 yesterday)
  • Of the 1,677 cases reported today, 356 are from Peel, 456 are from Toronto, 143 are from York Region, and 36 are from Simcoe-Muskoka
  • 16,204 current active cases in Ontario, down from 16,221 yesterday
  • Provincial public health labs have processed 58,190 tests since yesterday's report, which resulted in a 3.2 per cent positivity rate. The per cent positivity rate has stayed the same for the last three days.
  • There is a backlog of 51,051 tests awaiting processing

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 140,181 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 120,028 recoveries and 3,949 deaths. 

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 943.1 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario. The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 88 cases per 100,000 people from Dec. 3 to Dec. 9, which is up from 81.9 cases per 100,000 people from Nov. 27 to Dec. 3.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit does not publish new confirmed cases on the weekends, and will deliver an update on Monday. 

This week the local health unit reported 339 cases of COVID-19 for the week beginning Dec. 6. There are 361 active cases in the region and 15 people from Simcoe County are hospitalized as of Friday.
