Ontario confirms 148 new COVID cases today

This is the highest number of new cases reported in a single day since July 24

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 148 new cases of COVID-19 in the province today, but no more deaths have been reported. 

Seventy-five per cent of the new cases reported today have come from just four of Ontario's 34 health units. 

Ottawa Public Health reported 20 of the new cases, Peel Public Health reported 32, Toronto Public Health reported 41, and Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported 19 of today's new cases. 

Today's report is the highest number of new cases confirmed in a single day since July 24, when the province reported 195 new cases. 

A breakdown of new cases shows three cases have been removed by three health units, meaning there are actually 151 new cases included in today's report. 

Since last report, there have been 32,106 COVID-19 tests processed in Ontario labs and there are 29,491 tests awaiting results. The province has now completed more than 2.9 million coronavirus tests this year. 

To-date, the province has confirmed 42,083 cases of COVID-19, and reported 38,126 of those as recovered and another 2,809 have ended in death. 

Currently, there are 1,148 active cases in the province, including 51 people who have been hospitalized with the virus. There are 17 people in intensive care units and five people currently on ventilators with COVID-19.

As of Friday, Aug. 28, Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has now reported a total of 703 coronavirus cases in the region, with 671 of the cases in Simcoe County. Of those, 632 cases are now listed as recovered and 37 people have died.

There are 34 cases of COVID in Simcoe County not reported recovered, including 23 in Barrie, four in Bradford, two in Innisfil, one in Wasaga Beach, two in Essa, one in Tiny Township, and one in Penetanguishene. Two people are hospitalized.
