The Hospice Georgian Triangle Foundation (HGT) has cancelled the in-person portion of their annual fundraiser, the Hike or Bike for Hospice Georgian Triangle, and has decided to take the event online this year.

“The Ontario government has asked us to do more for our community by granting approval to open our additional four beds," said Janet Fairbridge, HGT foundation director. "The Ministry of Health continues to provide approximately 50 per cent of our operating costs, but we still have to fundraise to cover the other half. With 10 beds there are now more costs, so our need for community support through fundraising continues to be crucial. As money raised by the Hike or Bike for HGT is a large portion of our fundraising needs each year, we have decided to find a way to bring our community 'together' while maintaining social/physical distancing to help do our part to flatten the curve and control the spread of COVID-19. We continue to follow direction and guidance from our public health authorities."

Fairbridge continues, “This is a new, virtual approach for fundraising and awareness building for us, so we’re inviting our entire HGT community in South Georgian Bay and beyond to take part. You can register yourself as an individual virtual participant, or you can sign up a virtual team and challenge your friends, family and co-workers to participate and fundraise as well, but we will all do so in our own homes and on our own time. The “event” will begin immediately and will culminate on Sunday, May 31, 2020 (the original planned date for the Hike or Bike). You can participate as a “virtual hiker” or “virtual biker” and climb the stairs in your house, or take your walk around your neighbourhood (while maintaining social distance from others), or ride your stationary bike, or do any physical activity you like.”

Participants are then invited to share photos and videos of themselves doing their favourite activity. “This will help us to challenge and motivate each other and to stay connected with our wonderful community. Something we all need right now,” added Fairbridge.

Participants are asked to seek donations from their friends and family to sponsor their efforts. All donations support the work of Hospice Georgian Triangle in caring for patients and families throughout South Georgian Bay. Donations to the Hike or Bike for Hospice – Virtual Edition can be made online and you will receive your tax receipt immediately via email. See the HGT website for more details and to register at www.hospicegeorgiantriangle.com.

“The health, safety and well-being of our whole community as well as patients, visitors, volunteers and staff are of the utmost importance to us. HGTF understands this is a very stressful time for everyone, especially with the uncertainty around personal financial health. Every little bit helps HGTF, and with the need for palliative care beds increasing, we need your help more than ever.”

Thank you for your ongoing support of the Hospice Georgian Triangle Foundation.
