Nearly one year after the declaration of a global pandemic caused by COVID-19, the Grey Bruce Health Unit has reported its first local death related to the coronavirus disease.

The Grey Bruce Health Unit reported the death of a man in his 60s who died in hospital on Jan. 30.

The health unit noted the man had been in isolation in the hospital since early January. The health unit did not report which hospital was involved or where the man is from, just that he resided in Grey Bruce region.

“I offer my sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the gentleman who passed away," said medical officer of health for the region Dr. Ian Arra, in a press release. "Unfortunately, the news of this death only highlights the need for everyone to take this virus very seriously. It requires our collective actions to stem the spread of this virus. Please, stay at home and stay safe.”

The health unit has confirmed 642 cases of COVID-19 in the region since the start of the pandemic.
