Health unit reports 35 new COVID cases in region today

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 35 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths in today's update. 

There are currently 439 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

Yesterday, the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board reported a confirmed COVID case at St. Mary's Catholic School (elementary) in Collingwood. One classroom is closed.

According to the health unit, 216 local cases have tested positive for the B.1.1.7 variant that originated in the UK, which is up by 11 cases since last report. There are seven active cases confirmed as the B.1.1.7 strain.

Of the 11 cases confirmed as B.1.1.7 variants, six are sporadic cases, three are from institutional outbreaks and two are from workplace outbreaks. 

There are also 382 cases that have screened positive as variants (awaiting confirmatory testing to determine which variant), which is up by 15 cases since yesterday. There are 138 active cases that have screened positive as a variant of concern.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 6,589 cases of COVID-19 with 5,906 of those cases recovered and 189 cases ending in death. 

There are 19 people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19. This includes one new hospitalization since yesterday.

The health unit has administered 45,199 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 in Simcoe Muskoka.  

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified): 

  • Barrie (18): Ten individuals between 18 and 34 years old, four men between 35 and 44 years old, and three women and a man between 45 and 64 years old. Eight cases are linked to close contact, two are attributed to community transmission, and one is outbreak-related. 
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (3): Two men between 18 and 34 years old, and one woman between 35 and 44 years old. One case is linked to close contact. 
  • Orillia (3): A woman between 18 and 34 years old, a man between 35 and 44 years old, and an individual between 45 and 64 years old. All three cases are linked to close contact. 
  • Penetanguishene (3): Two men between 18 and 34 years old and a man between 35 and 44 years old. 
  • Tay (1): A woman between 45 and 64 years old. 
  • Tiny (1): A man between 65 and 79 years old.
  • Severn (2): A woman and a man between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to close contact. These are the first cases reported in Severn since Feb. 7.
  • New Tecumseth (2): A man between 18 and 34 years old and a man between 35 and 44 years old. 
  • There is one case in Gravenhurst and another case with location information listed as pending.
