Health unit confirms two new cases in area, one new outbreak

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has confirmed two new cases of COVID in Barrie as well as a new outbreak at a long-term care facility. 

The health unit declared a COVID-19 outbreak at Mill Creek Care Centre, which is a long-term care home in the city. 

According to the Mill Creek Care Centre website, the home accommodates 160 residents separated into five resident home areas, each housing 32 residents. 

An outbreak is declared at a long-term care home if there is a single positive test result discovered in a staff or resident.

There is one new case today attributed to an institutional outbreak – a woman between 35 and 44 years old. 

The second case confirmed today is a girl under the age of 18. She is a close contact of a known case. 

Including today's two new cases, there have been six cases confirmed in Barrie residents in two days. One person has now been hospitalized in Barrie.

The health unit is monitoring three other outbreaks of an unknown origin, although they are characterized as "respiratory." All three are child care centres with one located in Barrie, one in Collingwood and one in Alliston. So far, no tests have confirmed COVID-19. 

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has now reported a total of 688 coronavirus cases in the region, with 656 of the cases in Simcoe County. Of those, 627 cases are now listed as recovered and 37 people have died. 

There are 24 active cases of COVID in Simcoe County, including 12 in Barrie, two in Bradford, two in New Tecumseth, four in Innisfil, one in Wasaga Beach, two in Essa, and one in Penetanguishene.  Two people are hospitalized.
