Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported two new cases of COVID-19 today - a Springwater man and a Bradford woman.

In Collingwood, there have been a total of eight cases confirmed. One person left the region, and the other seven cases have recovered. In Wasaga Beach there have been eight cases confirmed, three have recovered and one man has died.

In The Blue Mountains, the first case was confirmed this weekend. In Clearview there have been two cases, both have recovered.

Ontario Public Health is reporting 525 new COVID-19 cases today, 429 recoveries and 59 more deaths.

Yesterday, the region's medical officer of health, Dr. Charles Gardner said there will likely be no Canada Day gatherings as the province's actions to relax public health measures will be "prolonged."

“It’s premature to begin it now. We have plateaued, but we’re certainly not coming down (in new cases)," he said. "Until we’ve managed to vaccinate the population there will be a need to restrict the size of crowds and have some form of physical distancing.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the latest COVID-19 modelling numbers released today will show that public health measures are working, but warns that the pandemic is far from over.

Today's essential worker of the day is Jenna Dunlevy.

CollingwoodToday would like your help in recognizing local essential workers from health care workers, physicians, cashiers and delivery drivers. If you'd like to say thanks to someone you know, please send a photo, their name, their job title, and your words of thanks to [email protected]. Please only send photos and information with permission.
