11 new COVID-19 cases, three deaths in Simcoe Muskoka today

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is reporting 11 new cases of COVID-19 today, including three cases related to long-term care home outbreaks in Barrie.

There have also been three more deaths since yesterday’s report, all of them in Barrie, and all residents of Owen Hill Care Community. 

The victims were all male, one in his 60s, one in his 70s, and one in his 90s, the health unit confirmed this afternoon.

Most of the 11 new cases come from Barrie, where there are three outbreak-related cases including a man and a woman in their 70s and a man in his 80s.

Dr. Charles Gardner, medical officer of health for the region is not providing a case update until tomorrow so it’s unclear at what facility those cases have been found.

Another outbreak-related case was discovered in Huntsville in a woman in her 90s. The only outbreak in Huntsville was reported today at Muskoka Traditions.

The other cases reported today include a man in his 40s from Barrie, a woman in her 20s from Barrie, and a boy under 10 also from Barrie. For all those cases, the transmission source is listed as undetermined or under investigation.

In nearby Clearview, another case has been confirmed in a man in his 30s. The health unit is reporting his case as community-acquired.

There is also a man in his 50s from Bradford West-Gwillimbury listed on today’s COVID-19 update from the health unit. His transmission source is also listed as under investigation.

A new case in New Tecumseth, a woman in her 20s, was community-acquired.

One final case, a woman in her 20s, does not specify where she is from.

An outbreak declared at IOOF (Odd Fellow and Rebekah Home) in Barrie on April 21 is now declared over.

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit’s Dr. Charles Gardner declared the outbreak after confirming one case of COVID-19 in a staff member.

No other cases were confirmed, and the health unit said it helped facilitate testing of staff and residents at the facility.

This is the second COVID-19 outbreak at a long-term care facility in the county to be declared over. Previously, an outbreak declared at Spencer House in Orillia also ended with a single case in a staff member and no evidence of further spread.

There are six active outbreaks in Simcoe County, including Bradford Valley Care Community (11 staff cases, 25 resident cases, nine deaths), at Owen Hill Care Community in Barrie (14 resident cases, eight staff cases), Woods Park Care Centre in Barrie (two staff cases), Whispering Pines Retirement Residence in Barrie (one staff and one resident case), Allandale Station Retirement Residence in Barrie (one resident case), and Bayview Retirement Home in Waubaushene (one resident and one staff case).

There have now been 329 cases of COVID-19 confirmed in the Simcoe-Muskoka region, including 172 recoveries and 23 deaths. There are seven people hospitalized.

The breakdown of cases in each municipality is as follows:

Barrie (108 cases, 53 recoveries, 6 deaths, 1 in hospital), Bradford West Gwillimbury (77 cases, 28 recoveries, 9 deaths, 3 in hospital), New Tecumseth (22 cases, 16 recoveries, 1 in hospital), Orillia (16 cases, 9 recoveries, 2 deaths), Collingwood (8 cases, 7 recoveries), Innisfil (26 cases, 12 recoveries), Springwater (6 cases, 4 recoveries, 1 death), Midland (6 cases, 5 recoveries), Wasaga Beach (8 cases, 5 recoveries, 1 death), Oro-Medonte (5 cases, 2 recoveries, 2 deaths, 1 in hospital), Adjala-Tosorontio (7 cases, 5 recoveries), Clearview (5 cases, 2 recoveries, 1 in hospital), Essa (6 cases, 3 recoveries, 1 death), Ramara (3 cases, 2 recoveries), Tiny (2 cases, all recovered), Tay (1 case), Penetanguishene (2 cases, all recovered), and Severn (2 cases) for a total of 310 cases in Simcoe County, including 157 recoveries.

There are also 18 confirmed positive cases in Muskoka, and 15 have recovered, one person from Muskoka Lakes has died.

The case rate (including lab-confirmed cases only) for Simcoe-Muskoka region is 53 cases per 100,000 population. The provincial average is 123.2 cases per 100,000 population.
