WATCH: Two new long-term care homes will be built in Mississauga by 2021, Ford says

Through the Accelerated Build Pilot Program, beds will be available in months rather than years

Premier Doug Ford introduced a new program to enable the construction of two new-long term care homes in Mississsauga in a matter of months.

The Accelerated Build Pilot Program is intended to add up to 640 new long-term care beds by 2021.

Through a range of accelerating measures such as modular construction, rapid procurement and the use of hospital lands, the government and its partners are targeting completion of the projects in 2021.

Trillium Health Partners will work with Infrastructure Ontario to manage the day-to-day construction oversight, monitor commissioning, and provide timely status reporting on progress.

Premier Doug Ford is expected to make a COVID-19 update at 1 p.m. in Mississauga today.

Ford will be joined by Minister of Long-Term Care Merrilee Fullerton, Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie and President and CEO of Trillium Health Partners Michelle DiEmanuele to make the announcement.

Today's press conference comes one day after the Ontario government said all but three regions in the province can advance to Stage 3 on Friday.

Durham, Halton, Hamilton, Niagara, Lambton, Haldimand-Norfolk, and York regions all got the go-ahead.

Peel, Toronto, and Windsor-Essex are held back for the time being.
